Owen Wright

Owen Wright

WSL Surfers, Australian

Growing up on the south coast of New South Wales in Australia, Owen Wright has had his fair share of good waves. Owen has a super smooth style and mixes skilled barrel riding with an aerial attack that most surfers can only dream of. Owen solidified his status as a force in surfing during the 2008/2009 Season as a wildcard. In the Rip Curl WCT events, he was the unofficial giant killer defeating tour veterans like Kelly Slater.

A former Rookie of the Year who climbed to number 12 in the world on his comeback from injury, Owen chose JS Industries after extensive testing. “At one point,” recalls Wright, “Before the Quiksilver Pro, there were 80 boards in my living room I was testing!” All part of Owen’s search for the right materials that would help him achieve his ultimate goal of world champion. “It was JS who felt right, standing out as the best and most consistent for what I want from a board.”

The results from the partnership speak for themselves, with Owen recording the best competitive year of his life in 2015 - two perfect heats in Fiji (one of them being the final!), his first CT event win in 4 years, a cavalcade of finals appearances and a shot at the World Title going into the final event. A great deal of this success can definitely be attributed to the extra work Big O put in on the side, with his detailed "board diary" breaking down favourites and talking points to share with JS later on.

Some of his best warm-ups included a series of standout freesurfs everywhere from Australia's most treacherous slabs to Teahupo'o and Pipe, but unfortunately, it was also at Pipe that Owen suffered an injury on the eve of the World Title showdown, rendering him unable to compete for a short time. At this stage Owen is still making his way back to 100%, and while he's taking the time to ensure everything is ready before returning, we know he'll be back on top of the world soon.
